Six.

Part 16.

With the “go ahead” from the doctor, a little help/advice from Amy, the nurse, and a final decision for us to proceed, I kept taking my meds throughout the weekend and beginning of the week.

We had an appointment on Wednesday morning for another ultrasound and another blood test to check estrogen levels.  This might be my 6th or 7th pelvic ultrasound in the last year, but it’s something you never get used to.  Now that the doctor needs to get an EVEN BETTER look at my ovaries, he digs around more than usual.  Nothing like someone digging around in your uterus with a pole – especially someone who doesn’t even know what it feels like to have a uterus.

We arrived to Dr. Carnovale’s office and per usual, the office is filled with people.  It’s like a revolving door of patients.  With every patient on the same calendar – especially in the beginning – it’s like clock-work to move each patient through the steps of the check-up – check-ups that happen about every three days.  This time, however, Ben’s the only guy who’s been drug along.  He doesn’t care.  With the roller coaster we’ve been on, he’s committed to being at every appointment from now on.  Any news – good or bad – we get together.

Sarah opens the door and calls me back.  We head back and she escorts us into Room 2.  PHEW.  Room 2.  I like Room 2.  I disrobe from the waist down, sit on the table and throw the paper “blanket” over my lap.

All of the sudden…I’m nervous.

I didn’t feel it until that moment, but I feel it now.  I’m nervous that the cyst has grown.  I’m nervous that something has gone wrong in the last five days.  It would be just our luck.

I don’t have a ton of time to be nervous through, because a few short minutes later and Dr. Carnovale and Amy are in the room.  He sits down right away, Amy flips off the lights, and in goes the ultrasound probe.  He wastes no time and starts digging around, snapping pictures and printing some off as he does.

Ben and I are watching on the screen as he snaps and measures and prints and digs – but I have no clue what I am looking at – and I’m wondering how he does either.

Just like that, it’s over.  Dr. Carnovale pulls the probe out, snaps his gloves off, and invites me to sit up – while Amy’s already turning the lights back on.  He says, “Well Jess, it looks like the cyst hasn’t grown at all.  I see about 6 follicles forming right now on your ovaries.  I’d like to see more, but in your case, that’s a pretty good number.  Keep taking your meds.  Sarah will call you with your new dosages when your estrogen tests are back this afternoon.

See you Friday.

Just like that he’s out the door with Amy shortly behind him.

I look at Ben and say, “I’ll take six.”

He responds, “Me too.”
